artisanal
adjective
pertaining to or noting a high quality or distinctive product
made in small quantities, usually by hand or using traditional methods
The term artisanal is quite the buzz word these days. And while we don’t want to jump on the bandwagon just for the sake of being trendy, we believe that with our use of distinctive ingredients and focus on flavour, The Crackerbox Bakery is the very definition of an artisanal bakery.
What makes our cupcakes special? BEANS! Yep, you read that correctly. Our cupcakes are made with black beans instead of flour. This not only makes them naturally gluten free*, they’re also deliciously moist and flavorful! Another cool thing about our cupcakes: they’re made in a blender! While this may fly in the face of the traditional way of making cakes with a mixer, we’ve found that nothing is lost, and in fact the texture of our cakes is enhanced by this unconventional mixing method. Don’t believe us? Just try one– you’ll be sold after one bite!
We’ve also put a lot of thought into our frostings. While many bakeries rely on the old standby—buttercream (whipped butter and powdered sugar)— we wanted a frosting that had just as much personality as our cakes. To that end, we have chosen to top our cupcakes in luxurious Italian buttercream frosting which uses egg whites for structure and a rich, creamy texture. While this frosting is both more ingredient and labour intensive, the result is more than worth it!
Less waste, more cupcake
According to the EPA, food and packaging/containers account for almost 45% of waste sent to the landfill. We’d prefer not to contribute to the problem, so we don’t use plastic containers to store and display our cupcakes and cakes. Our bakery boxes are recyclable and we encourage our customers to do so when all the cupcakes are gone!
Though she be little…
As the name denotes, we are small startup bakery located in Greensboro, North Carolina. So small in fact that we have neither our own kitchen nor a store front! Luckily for us however, we are able to utilized shared kitchen space through the Out of the Garden Project and were selected to be a part of Kitchen Connects GSO, an incubator program for local food business entrepreneurs.
Since we don’t have the resources of a traditional bakery, our baked goods are sold at local farmers markets and by order, only. In an effort to support and sustain our local farmers, whenever possible we use locally sourced ingredients.
